As an Eagle Scout, I understand the importance of protecting our natural resources. Our ponds, rivers, and parks must continue to be spaces for wildlife to thrive, but also spaces for our residents to recreate.
Although the proposed Palmer Renewable Energy Plant was successfully blocked, Springfield is still ranked as one of the worst cities for air quality according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. This hurts our existing residents, and will keep future residents from investing in Springfield.
We must work to preserve and protect existing green spaces and urban woodlands, and to equitably regrow our tree canopy in every neighborhood of the city. Trees naturally cool our community, reduce heat islands, and improve mental health - they are an asset and Springfield must start treating them as such.
All existing buildings, facilities, and undeveloped city property should be reviewed to determine the feasibility of solar panels. All new municipal buildings in our city should incorporate smart energy solutions to mitigate electricity costs, and to foster local investment in green manufacturing and infrastructure.
I am a proud supporter of Springfield’s ECOS Program. I will work to expand participation in this life changing experience.
